Anonymizing a Study

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

It is sometimes necessary to anonymize a study so that all sensitive patient information encoded in the study's DICOM files are scrubbed. To anonymize a study:

1.In the study browser, select the study you wish to anonymize.
2.Click the Anonymize Selected Study button in the toolbar, or select Anonymize from the context menu.
3.Fill in the dialog box that appears with the anonymous patient information. You will be warned if the values you enter are too similar to the original patient's information.

Important Note

There are a few limitations with how the anonymizer tool scrubs a study. In order to protect the patient privacy, you should always review the resulting anonymized files to ensure that there is not remnant patient information.

Does NOT detect or anonymize any patient information which may be present directly in the pixel data of the images (N.B.: this is extremely common in ultrasound images).
Does NOT detect or anonymize any patient information which may be present in the body of any attached documents or reports (e.g. PDFs or SRs). It is strongly recommended that you do not keep any documents or reports and that, if you do choose to keep them, you review the documents to ensure that there is no remnant patient information.
Does NOT detect or anonymize any patient information which may be present in the contents of private tags. It is strongly recommended that you do not keep private tags and that, if you do choose to keep them, you review the resulting files to ensure that there is no remnant patient information.
4.Click OK. A new, anonymized copy study will be generated and will appear in My Studies. If desired, you may now delete the original study.
